What Can a Podiatrist Do?

Podiatrists are medical experts who assist with issues that impact your feet, or lower legs. They treat injuries as well as problems resulting from chronic health conditions like diabetes. They are often referred to as a podiatric physician or a doctor of podiatric medicine.
Podiatrists are doctors?
Podiatrists are doctors but they do not go to traditional medical schools. They own their own institutions and associations for professional professionals. There is also "DPM" (doctor of podiatric surgery) in their names in place of "MD" (medical doctor).
Podiatrists are able to perform surgeries, fix fractured bones, prescribe medicines and can make appointments for lab tests or X-rays. They often work closely together with specialists whenever you have a problem that affects the lower leg or your feet. In the U.S., podiatrists are licensed and are regulated by the government agencies of the states.
Education and Training
In college, students looking to become podiatrists will take classes in biology, chemistry, and physics alongside other science courses to prepare them for the podiatry program. A majority earn a bachelor's in biology or another similar discipline of science.
They then attend the podiatry institute for four years. They study how bones, nerves and muscles work together to assist you to move. They also study illnesses and injuries that could affect your feet. That includes how to diagnose the problem and treat it, and how to repair your feet with surgery if needed.
